RAM Prices in 2026: The Shortage Explained
RAM prices in 2026 are at historic highs following a structural supply crisis driven by AI data center demand. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron β who together control over 95% of global DRAM production β have redirected manufacturing capacity toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI accelerators. SK Hynix has reported its HBM, DRAM, and NAND capacity is sold out through the end of 2026.
How severe is it? TrendForce reported conventional DRAM contract prices surged 90β95% quarter-over-quarter in Q1 2026 β the largest single-quarter increase on record. Micron shut down its Crucial consumer brand in February 2026, exiting the consumer RAM market entirely after 30 years to focus on enterprise AI customers. Samsung raised 32GB DDR5 module prices from $149 to $239 in a matter of months.
What this means for buyers: For new builds on AMD AM5 or Intel LGA1851, DDR5 is the only option β DDR5-6000 CL30 is the sweet spot for AMD, DDR5-5600 to DDR5-6400 for Intel. For existing AM4 or LGA1700 systems, buying DDR4 now is advisable as remaining inventory depletes with no new consumer production.
Analysts project the shortage will persist through at least 2027β2028, with Micron warning meaningful supply relief won't arrive until 2028 and SK Hynix's CEO citing 2030 as a possible end date. Gartner has coined the term "memflation" to describe the sustained price environment. Use our Price/GB Calculator to compare value, or read why RAM prices are so high for the full analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average price of DDR5 RAM in 2026?
DDR5 RAM averages $19.96/GB per GB in 2026 β up 400%+ from mid-2025 lows due to AI-driven supply shortages. DDR5-6000 CL30 32GB kits are the best value for gaming builds.
Is DDR4 or DDR5 RAM a better value right now?
DDR4 averages $8.65/GB vs DDR5 at $19.96/GB β DDR4 is cheaper, but your CPU platform determines which you can use. AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 require DDR5; AM4 and LGA1700 use DDR4.
How much RAM do I need for gaming in 2026?
32GB is the sweet spot for gaming in 2026. Most AAA titles use 16β24GB alongside Discord and a browser. 16GB is the minimum; 64GB is only needed for content creation or VMs.
What RAM speed should I buy?
Match your platform: DDR5-6000 CL30 for AMD AM5, DDR4-3600 CL16 for AMD AM4, DDR5-5600β6400 for Intel LGA1851. Always enable XMP or EXPO in BIOS β without it, RAM runs at slow JEDEC defaults.
How often are RAM prices updated on this site?
Prices and availability are obtained via the Amazon Creators API and refreshed daily. Figures shown are as of the last refresh and may differ at checkout on Amazon.com. We track 4,490+ modules across DDR4, DDR5, laptop SO-DIMM, desktop DIMM, and server ECC.
Should I wait for RAM prices to drop before buying?
Analysts do not expect meaningful relief until 2027β2028 at the earliest β Micron warns "at least 2028", Samsung and SK Hynix say "2027 and beyond". If you need RAM now, buying is the recommended strategy.
Why are DDR5 prices so high in 2026?
Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron β who control 95%+ of global DRAM production β have redirected capacity toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI accelerators. TrendForce reported DDR5 contract prices surged 90β95% in Q1 2026 alone, the largest single-quarter increase on record.
What is the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 RAM?
DDR5 offers higher bandwidth (up to 6400 MT/s vs DDR4's 3200 MT/s), lower operating voltage (1.1V vs 1.2V), and on-die ECC. However, DDR5 is not backward compatible β your motherboard must explicitly support it. New AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 platforms require DDR5.
