How to buy RAM for AMD AM4 without overpaying

Buying context, speed tiers, and platform notes

AM4 is DDR4-only. Buy a matched dual-stick DDR4-3600 CL16 kit — $7.81/GB median DDR4 today. Rank by $/GB below, prefer an Amazon stock signal, then enable XMP/DOCP.

1. Capacity first

CapacityBuy whenSkip when
32GB (2×16)Modern gaming and multitaskingBudget is extremely tight
16GB (2×8)Light titles / hard budgetYou stream or keep many apps open
64GB DDR4Creators stuck on AM4 for nowYou can move to AM5 soon

2. Why 3600 CL16 wins

On Zen 2/3, DDR4-3600 commonly keeps FCLK near 1800 MHz in 1:1 — strong gaming value without exotic voltages. CL16 is the usual latency target. If 3600 CL16 is scarce or expensive, DDR4-3200 CL16 is a small real-world step down.

3. After it arrives

  1. Seat both sticks in the recommended dual-channel slots (check the manual).
  2. Enable XMP / DOCP in BIOS (XMP / EXPO guide). Confirm the OS shows ~3600 MT/s.
  3. Unsure about the board? Use the compatibility checker.

AMD AM4 RAM FAQ

What RAM speed is best for AMD AM4?

AMD lists representative Ryzen 5000 CPUs at up to DDR4-3200. On Ryzen 3000/5000 (Zen 2/3), DDR4-3600 CL16 is a practical overclock target that can keep Infinity Fabric (FCLK) near 1800 MHz in a 1:1 relationship when the CPU, board, BIOS, and kit support it. Use DDR4-3200 CL16 as the safe-value fallback and verify 3600 against the motherboard QVL.

Should I upgrade an AM4 PC to DDR5?

Usually no. DDR5 requires a new CPU and motherboard (AM5). For an existing AM4 board, a better dual-stick DDR4 kit is almost always the smarter spend. Move to AM5 only when you are replacing the platform — then shop DDR5-6000 CL30.

How much RAM for AM4 gaming in 2026?

32GB (2×16GB) is the recommended capacity. 16GB (2×8GB) still works for lighter titles, but 32GB is better for modern games plus Discord and a browser. Prefer matched dual-stick kits.

Do I need XMP or DOCP on AM4?

Yes. Enable XMP (or AMD DOCP / EXPO-equivalent on some boards) in BIOS so the kit leaves slow JEDEC defaults. Without a profile you leave performance on the table — see the XMP / EXPO guide.

Is four-stick DDR4 OK on AM4?

Often workable on AM4 versus DDR5, but dual-stick kits still train more reliably and leave upgrade slots. Prefer 2×16GB for 32GB unless your QVL lists a four-stick kit at your target speed.

Is DDR4 getting expensive or hard to find?

New DDR4 wafer allocation has tightened industry-wide, so remaining stock can look pricey versus older years. Still buy DDR4 for AM4 — do not force a platform swap just for memory. Rank by $/GB on this hub and the DDR4-3600 CL16 page.

How we calculate RAM prices

Tracked vs qualified, $/GB, anomalies & affiliate disclosure

We track 765 live listings for this category across Amazon's affiliate catalog and display 747 qualified on this page. Tracked is the raw universe for the category; qualified are the records that pass our accuracy checks (valid price, real RAM module, parseable capacity) and are used for all market statistics and recommendations below.

Median $/GB is the middle price-per-gigabyte across the qualified catalog — a robust market measure that is not skewed by a handful of very cheap or very expensive kits. Median kit price, price-by-capacity and price-by-speed tables use the same qualified universe.

We exclude a small number of price anomalies — listings whose $/GB is implausibly high or low relative to the category median (usually a scraped or mis-entry). A recommendation is only shown for a product that also passes eligibility: a valid ID, price, capacity, speed and CAS latency, so we never recommend an incomplete or un-buyable listing.

Prices refresh from Amazon daily (full snapshot) and update within the day as listings change. In-stock and availability reflect the most recent fetch.
