Memory tuning for ASUS ROG Ally (Z1 & Extreme)

Original ROG Ally is soldered 16GB LPDDR5-6400. Windows 11 plus a 4–8GB GPU share is the real bottleneck β€” set Armoury Crate GPU memory to 6G and fix the pagefile; DIMMs will not fit.

Not a buyable RAM upgrade

ASUS ROG Ally (Z1 & Extreme) memory is soldered. Use the UMA / VRAM tools below, then jump to a socketed mini-PC or laptop guide if you need dual-channel SO-DIMM kits.

Why ASUS ROG Ally (Z1 & Extreme) stutters (or pages)

Unlike SteamOS, Ally boots a full Windows 11 stack (DWM, Game Bar, Armoury services) that already eats 3–4GB idle. Pushing GPU Shared Memory to 8G leaves ~8GB for OS + game threads, so Cyberpunk/Alan Wake 2 hitch when DirectStorage and shader caches allocate. The hitch is often pagefile thrash, not a weak 780M.

What to buy or configure

If you still own a 16GB Ally and constantly OOM, budget for an Ally X (24GB) or a dual-channel mini-PC β€” not aftermarket LPDDR. For the chassis you have: 6G GPU share, fixed ~16GB pagefile, and disable startup bloat before chasing TDP presets.

Memory deep dive

The ASUS ROG Ally (Z1 / Z1 Extreme) feeds Radeon 780M graphics from 16GB soldered LPDDR5-6400 on a 128-bit bus. Bandwidth is excellent; capacity under Windows is not. There is no user SO-DIMM path β€” every β€œRAM upgrade” conversation should be about UMA partitioning and OS footprint, or stepping up to Ally X / a socketed mini-PC.

Clearance / form factor: Not applicable β€” memory is soldered; no SO-DIMM clearance path.

Tuning notes: In Armoury Crate SE β†’ Settings β†’ Operating Mode β†’ GPU Settings, set Memory Assigned to GPU to 6G (best balance on 16GB). Auto can bounce allocations mid-session. Pair with a fixed Windows pagefile (~16384 MB) so AAA spikes do not spike disk latency.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is ROG Ally Z1 Extreme RAM upgradeable?β–Ό
No. LPDDR5 is soldered. Ignore listings that imply SO-DIMM upgrades for this handheld.
What GPU memory setting is best on a 16GB Ally?β–Ό
6G is the practical sweet spot: enough for 1080p textures while leaving ~10GB for Windows and the game. 8G often causes OS starvation.
Why does Ally stutter more than Steam Deck with the same 16GB?β–Ό
Windows 11’s idle footprint is larger than SteamOS. The same soldered pool has less free headroom before paging starts.
Should I buy Ally X instead of RAM?β–Ό
If you regularly hit OOM on 16GB Ally, Ally X’s 24GB soldered pool is the capacity jump that actually helps β€” shopping DIMMs for the original Ally will not.
