Why ASUS ROG Ally X stutters (or pages)
Ally X mostly removes the 16GB Windows trap: an 8GB GPU assignment still leaves a desktop-class 16GB for OS + game. Remaining hitching is usually thermal/TDP, shader compilation, or SD-card storage latency β not commit charge. If you still page, check for memory-leaking overlays rather than raising GPU share further.
What to buy or configure
Buy Ally X when you know you need headroom for Windows + AAA + Discord. Capacity is fixed at 24GB for life. Upgrade dollars go to a fast internal SSD and a good SD/microSD strategy, not RAM kits. For expandable memory, choose Framework or a SER/UM mini-PC.
Memory deep dive
ROG Ally X is the capacity fix for the original Ally: 24GB LPDDR5X-7500 soldered to the Z1 Extreme board so an 8GB graphics share and a full 16GB OS/game pool can coexist. Memory remains non-upgradeable; the editorial win is knowing you should stop hunting SO-DIMMs and instead verify the 8G GPU preset and storage speed.
Clearance / form factor: Not applicable β LPDDR5X-7500 is package-soldered for density and power.
Tuning notes: Keep Armoury Crate Memory Assigned to GPU at 8G (ASUS sweet spot). Only experiment with Auto/higher if a specific titleβs VRAM telemetry is pegged while system RAM remains free. Avoid cutting GPU share below 6G on Ally X β you already paid for capacity headroom.
