Why MSI Claw stutters (or pages)
Meteor Lake Arc (Xe-LPG) is more sensitive to memory allocation churn than RDNA2 handheld APUs. Driver timeouts and DX12 device resets often appear when shared memory is left on Auto while Windows reclaim races a title’s residency. This is a Claw-specific failure mode: update Arc + fix a 6G floor before blaming the SSD.
What to buy or configure
Purchase Claw only if you accept soldered 16GB. Spend after-buy budget on storage and a good cooler grip/case airflow, not RAM. Prefer AMD Z1 Extreme handhelds or socketed mini-PCs if expandable memory is a hard requirement.
Memory deep dive
MSI Claw is the Intel Arc handheld outlier: Core Ultra + soldered LPDDR5-6400 feeding Xe-LPG. Editorial focus is driver-aware UMA floors and Windows commit, not SO-DIMM shopping. Capacity is fixed at 16GB for the life of the device.
Clearance / form factor: Not applicable — LPDDR5 is soldered around the Intel package.
Tuning notes: Open MSI Center M → GPU / Graphics options → set shared memory to 6G (or Auto only after drivers are current). Arc’s dynamic allocator behaves better with a guaranteed floor. Pair with Windows Game Mode on and avoid stacking multiple RGB/overlay SDKs.
